About Joan

Joan Hortalà is partner at Cuatrecasas, advising corporate groups with a strong international tax background. He specializes in international taxation and transfer pricing. Mr. Hortalà began his career as a lecturer at the University of Barcelona, and later joined the Spanish Tax Authorities as State Finance auditor, holding several positions during his nine-year collaboration: including coordinator of the double-taxation treaties area (Directorate General for Taxes); delegate of the Ministry of the Economy and Finance in Working Party 6 of the Committee on Fiscal Affairs — the working group for transfer pricing of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) (1994 – 1997); chief inspector of the Barcelona tax authorities; national expert at the European Commission in Brussels (1997 – 2000) and member of the Regional Tax Court in Barcelona. Before joining Cuatrecasas, he was a partner at PwC, where he directed the Spanish desk in New York (2004 – 2006). Mr. Hortalà is recommended by several directories, including Chambers Europe, Best Lawyers, Expert Guides, Who's Who Legal and World Transfer Pricing in Tax. He has also published several books on taxation, in addition to over 60 articles in Spanish and international journals on international taxation, ecommerce, transfer pricing, and financial assets. He has spoken at more than 80 conferences in Europe and America, and lectures at Pompeu Fabra University (Barcelona). Joan Hortalà holds a Degree in Law from the Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia, a Degree in Business Administration from the University of Barcelona and a PhD. in Economic Science from the University of Barcelona. He is admitted to the Barcelona Bar.
