Kirk Van Brunt is an Assistant Vice President at Fidelity & Guaranty Life Insurance Company and has more than 30 years of experience with the taxation of financial institutions and products, with a particular focus on insurance companies and insurance products. Within the insurance arena, Kirk has substantial experience with life insurance company taxation, including reinsurance, life insurance company tax issues, FATCA for insurance companies, and life insurance/annuity product tax issues of all types. Kirk also has substantial experience in the tax treatment of asset-backed securities and derivative financial instrument, in-bound tax issues for the foreign investor, and Subchapter L of the Code generally. Kirk is widely published and frequent speaker at industry conferences and seminars.
Prior to joining Fidelity & Guaranty in 2016, Kirk was a partner at Locke Lord in 2008-15, and he spent 17 years with Davis & Harman LLP in Washington, D.C., starting out as an Associate in 1987. In 1990 he left Davis to become a Senior Associate with Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton, but returned to Davis in 1994 where he was elevated to Partner in 1997. Mr. Van Brunt started his career in the private sector in 1985 as an Associate with Patton, Boggs, & Blow.
Mr. Van Brunt is a member of the Federal Bar Association, the American Bar Association, and the Tax Executives Institute. He was Chair, Committee on Insurance Companies, Tax Section, American Bar Association from 2006 – 2008, and Vice Chair & Secretary, Committee on Insurance Companies, Tax Section, American Bar Association from 2002 – 2006.
